The Riverline Hobo Bag is designed around movement: a relaxed curved opening, a generous body and a long shoulder line. A narrow Dong brocade ribbon and hand-assembled ornament introduce rhythm without turning heritage into decoration.
Craft and character
Each woven accent refers back to the living Dong brocade tradition and to Yunbuyao's work with artisan communities in Tongdao, Hunan. The textile is used as part of an object made for daily life—because heritage continues when it continues to be used.

01 / DESIGN INTENT
A generous crescent is balanced by a fine woven accent: softness and structure, movement and order. The brocade appears as a measured interruption rather than an applied emblem.

The curved opening and woven details require careful alignment before the body is assembled. A hand-finished ornament carries loose threads and beads into a tactile final gesture.

From cotton thread to a living object.
Known historically as lun zhi, Dong brocade is a handwoven textile tradition carried through generations of Dong women for more than two millennia. Dyed cotton threads are counted, tensioned and woven into geometric order. The cloth is slow by nature: Yunbuyao project records note that weaving a single metre can require about three days, before the time-intensive preparation of the yarn and warp.

Colouring the yarn
Cotton yarn is prepared in a restrained palette. Colour is established before the structure of the pattern can emerge.

Preparing the warp
Threads are measured, counted and tensioned. A small error here can travel through the entire length of cloth.

Weaving the pattern
At the wooden loom, the shuttle builds the ground while selected threads form the geometric motif, one passage at a time.

Reading and placing
The finished brocade is read like a composition. Motifs are aligned with the product pattern before a cut is made.

Assembling the object
Textile, lining and hardware are brought together; edges, stitches and ornament are checked by hand before the piece leaves the studio.
WHY THE HANDWORK MATTERS
Heritage survives through use.
WOVELLUNE is the international expression of Yunbuyao’s long-term work with traditional textile practice. Since participating in Dong brocade development in Tongdao, the team has connected research, skills training and contemporary product design so that knowledge can remain active in the place where it was formed.
These bags do not attempt to reproduce a ceremonial object. They give handwoven cloth a daily role. Every measured panel asks the modern form to respect the time, judgement and variation held in the textile.
